The CERN Science Gateway is a state-of-the-art education and outreach facility located at the Meyrin site of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). Designed by the Renzo Piano Building Workshop, the complex serves as a bridge between the scientific community and the public, aiming to inspire the next generation of scientists through immersive exhibitions and hands-on laboratory experiences.
The architectural design is defined by two iconic suspended tubes that evoke the form of particle accelerators. The facility is designed with sustainability at its core, featuring a carbon-neutral footprint achieved through the installation of 4,000 square meters of solar panels and the planting of over 400 trees, effectively creating a forest-like environment that integrates the building into the surrounding landscape.
CERN initiated the project to expand its capacity for public engagement. Renzo Piano was selected as the architect, tasked with creating a space that reflects the transparency and openness of scientific research.
Despite global challenges, construction proceeded with a focus on environmental sustainability. The project was funded primarily through private donations, with the Stellantis Foundation being a major contributor.
The facility officially opened to the public in October 2023, providing permanent exhibition spaces, a large auditorium, and dedicated laboratory areas for school groups and the general public.
The Science Gateway represents a shift in how major scientific institutions communicate complex research to the public. By placing the facility at the entrance of the laboratory, CERN emphasizes that scientific discovery is a global, collaborative, and accessible human endeavor rather than an isolated academic pursuit.
Scholarly debates and areas of uncertainty
Discussions surrounding the facility often focus on the balance between architectural aesthetics and functional scientific communication, as well as the long-term impact of such high-profile outreach centers on public scientific literacy.
Entry Rules
Open Tuesday through Sunday. Admission is free, but visitors are encouraged to book time slots in advance via the official website to ensure access to exhibitions and guided tours.
Best Times to Visit
Weekdays during the school term for a quieter experience, or weekends for full access to all interactive workshops.
Photography
