The Judgement Tower (Sodni stolp) is a prominent defensive structure located along the Drava River in the Lent district of Maribor, Slovenia. Originally constructed as part of the city's medieval fortification system, the tower served to protect the river approach and the city walls from potential incursions.
The current structure reflects significant modifications from 1540, when it was rebuilt to incorporate Renaissance architectural elements. Over the following centuries, the tower underwent various expansions, including an early 17th-century extension and further modifications in the 19th century, resulting in its distinctive conical roof and multi-layered appearance.
The tower was established as a key component of Maribor's defensive wall system, designed to secure the city's southern perimeter along the Drava River.
Following the threat of Ottoman expansion, the tower was significantly rebuilt and reinforced, adopting the Renaissance architectural features that define its current silhouette.
After losing its military utility, the tower was integrated into the urban fabric of Maribor. It has since been restored and now serves as a venue for cultural events and exhibitions.
The Judgement Tower serves as a vital landmark of Maribor's historical identity, symbolizing the city's long-standing role as a fortified trade hub along the Drava River. It is a central feature of the Lent district, which is the oldest part of the city.
