The Ebu Beker Mosque, also known as the Abu Bakr Mosque, is a significant religious and architectural landmark located in the center of Shkodër, Albania. Originally constructed in the 18th century, the mosque served as a central hub for the local Muslim community for generations before being demolished during the communist era in the 20th century.
The current structure was rebuilt in the 1990s with the support of the Sheikh Abdullah Al-Zaid Al-Mahmoud Charitable Foundation. It incorporates traditional Ottoman architectural motifs, including a prominent central dome and two slender minarets, and serves as the primary place of worship for the city's Islamic population.
The original Ebu Beker Mosque was established during the Ottoman period in Shkodër, serving as a focal point for the city's religious and social life. It was named after the first Caliph, Abu Bakr.
During the state-sponsored campaign of atheism under the Enver Hoxha regime, the mosque was closed and subsequently demolished, along with many other religious sites across Albania.
Following the fall of communism and the restoration of religious freedom in Albania, the mosque was rebuilt on its original site. The project was funded by international donors and completed in 1995, restoring a key cultural landmark to the city center.
The Ebu Beker Mosque is a symbol of the religious revival in Albania following decades of state-enforced atheism. It represents the historical Ottoman influence on Shkodër's urban landscape and serves as a vital center for community gatherings and religious education.
